Plan a trip to Figueira Da Foz

Figueira da Foz, a port and fishing town on the mouth of the Mondego River, has become a well-known beach resort. Situated along a spectacular strip of the Atlantic coastline known as the “Costa de Prata,” the Silver Coast, the stunning beaches are surrounded by vast expanses of sand dunes and pine trees. Buarcos Beach is considered one of Figueira’s most beautiful beaches. Figueira da Foz is also home to an old and famed casino, one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.

Despite the great popularity of the town during the summer season, the town’s historic quarter has maintained its traditional charm. You can still see the fishermen on the beach with their nets and fresh catches, and the local restaurants feature mouthwatering fish and seafood dishes.

Though mainly known as a beach resort, Figueira also boasts impressive culture. In the Dr. Santo Rocha Municipal Museum, there are archaeological finds, weapons, works of art and ceramics, and African and Oriental ethnography. The interior of the beautiful house, Casa do Paco, is covered with 8000 Delft tiles taken from a shipwreck in the 17th century, and the Maritime Museum, located near Buracos Beach, presents the maritime history of Figueira. The salt museum, Nucleo Museologico do Sal, is a fascinating cultural and environment complex which documents the artisanal salt production in Figueira. It is located in the middle of salinas, salt producing lakes and facilities. Saint Antony Convent and Saint Julian Church are noteworthy religious sites in the town.

About 2 miles north of Figueira da Foz is the Serra da Boa Viagem mountain range, and the nearby national park, Parque Florestal da Serra da Boa Viagem, is full of pine, acacia, and eucalyptus trees; a recreational and picnic area; nature hikes; a challenging rope park; and mountain biking.
