About North West
Only London and the South East are more populated than the North West. It is known for its diverse landscape and character.
The North West of England borders in the north with Scotland, in the west with the Irish Sea and on the east with the Pennines Hills, which are known for their unique character as well as birdlife and flora, as well there are twenty mountain peaks which can be challenged. Three rivers rise in the North Pennines which are, the Tyne, Wear and the Tees.
The major cities in the southern region of North West England are Manchester and Liverpool. Manchester was one of the biggest centers of cotton and textile manufacturing during the industrial revolution era of the 18th and 19th century. The remnants of this period are still viewable as you travel through the historic Manchester with the mills and chimneys dotting the city landscape. Many of the mills were re-invented as pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Is there anyone on this planet that does not know that Liverpool is the hometown of the Beatles? Therefore, you won’t be surprised to know that there are routes “in the footsteps of the Beatles” passing by sites that influenced the "Fab Four" during their youth.
Liverpool was a maritime center and an important seaport. The Albert Dock, which opened in 1846 became an example to the “modern” world with new technology. The warehouses on Albert Dock are spread over five blocks, are five stories high, built from close to 25 million bricks and as such are the largest single collection of buildings in the UK listed as Grade 1. The Merseyside Maritime Museum opened up in one of the warehouses and over the years many entertainment spots such as art galleries, restaurants, pubs as well as hotels and museums were added, preserving and respecting the past so that the area was put on the UNESCO Heritage List.
Note: Headlines in 2021 read: “The World Heritage Committee deletes Liverpool - Maritime Mercantile City from UNESCO’s World Heritage List”. Unfortunately, due to many years of (over)development the historic value of this site has been depleted and so the UNESCO Heritage committee removed the Liverpool dock from the list.
“Chester in a day!” The town of Chester, once a major roman fort where you can still see Roman remains like an amphitheater and the walls that protected the town, is in the northern part of the North-West region. It is a small town, charming, interesting and posh. You can step out of the town to the Lake District and hike and bike and swim and row. The area is known for its natural beauty with lakes, woods, mountains as well as small villages. In the old city you have marvelous shopping opportunities in half-timber buildings of the Tudor-style.
Secret: We were told that at certain times of the year and on certain days, you will find “Ye olde City Town Crier” on where a few major streets “cross” in the city center.
The North West is associated with some famous people such as Sir Robert Peel who was the Prime minister two times, Ringo Star and George Harrison, singers with the Beatles, the romantic writer William Wordsworth who was from the county of Cumbria, as was Beatrix Potter, who wrote her famous tales of Peter Rabbit.
