About St Andrews
St. Andrews is a university town showcasing its past as Scotland's religious capital, as well as its importance to the world of golf.
On the east coast of Scotland, north of Edinburgh, is a small town, St. Andrews, named after the Apostle Saint Andrew, who is also the patron saint of Scotland. According to legend, his remains are kept in the St. Andrews Cathedral.
St. Andrews became a religious center and a pilgrimage site and the town developed around the cathedral and monastery. In 1413, the first university in Scotland was founded in the town and to this day is considered to be one of the leading universities in the world.
A moniker for St. Andrews is "Home of Golf". The game became popular during the 16th century in Scotland and so while travelling through St. Andrews one can partake of cultural and historic experiences, visit the St. Andrews Cathedral, the Castle, the museums and take time out to play a round of golf in “The Old Course”, the oldest golf course in Europe and probably the world.
Nestled in the heart of the Kingdom of Fife, the surrounding area is the perfect place for hiking along The Fife Coastal Path or the Fife Pilgrim Way. Don't miss the historic 11th century abbey in the city of Dunfermline, which was once the capital of Scotland. Besides the castle ruins and little villages, do spend some time in the picturesque borough of Culross - a living museum of 17th and 18th century life and stop to tour the 16th century royal residence, Falkland Palace.
