About Aviemore
The perfect place for exploring Cairngorms National Park, this busy town attracts locals and visitors from all over.
Aviemore, once a small settlement in the Scottish Highlands, became a major tourist destination with the development of the rail line at the end of the 19th century and the development of winter sports attractions in the mid 60's.
Aviemore is in the Cairngorms National Park, the largest national park in the UK, covering an area of 4,528 sq km. The town is located at the foot of the Cairngorms Mountains, a center for winter sports, including several ski slopes and lifts.
Besides skiing in the winter, opportunities for outdoor activities at The Cairngorms National Park include mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, kayaking and fishing.
You can partake of the history and culture in the small towns and villages in the park, as well as whiskey tasting at some of the famous distilleries of Scotland.
One of the highlights in the area is a visit to The Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore which presents the way the Highlanders lived from the 18th to the 20th centuries and holds the largest collection of artifacts of the Highland life.
Note: The museum is closed in the winter and usually opens beginning of April.
There are many castle ruins but Blair Castle and Gardens tells the personal story of the family that lived in the castle for more than 750 years.
The Cairngorm Reindeer Center is a free-range area for reindeer, the only one in the UK.
As in most towns you can relax and meet the locals in their small restaurants and pubs and local shops.
