The Old Town, known as Vila Vella, is the only remaining fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast. There are remnants of the 12th century castle that stood, as well as the stone walls and seven towers that enclosed the Old Town. Three of the towers are must-sees: the Joanas Tower, the Clock Tower, and the Codolar Tower.
The iconic early 20th century lighthouse in Tossa de Mar is located at the top of a cliff, the highest point of the Old Town, and offers spectacular views of the town and the coastline. It still functions and has been declared a national historical monument. There is a maritime heritage museum housed in the lighthouse.
Tossa de Mar’s Roman roots, dating back 2,000 years, are evident in the Els Amellers villa which is located in the hills behind the town. There are remains of a 1st century home of an aristocrat, including beautiful mosaics and thermal baths.
The town’s Municipal Museum is located in the 14th century baroque palace that had served as the Governor’s house, and its impressive collection incudes archeology, history, and art. The art collection includes contemporary works by Marc Chagall and other local and foreign artists.
The well-known artists who spent time in Tossa de Mar in the first part of the 20th century brought fame to the area. Marc Chagall, the famous painter, lived in there and dubbed Tossa “the blue paradise” due to its crystal blue waters. The Hollywood actress, Ava Gardner, who filmed the movie “Pandora” in Tossa, fell in love with the area. In fact, she has been immortalized in the town with a bronze statue standing atop a hill, overlooking the bay.
