About Sitges
Located about 22 miles southwest of Barcelona, Sitges is a unique, well-known Catalan coast resort on the mouth of the Ebro River.
With a coastal stretch of about 12 miles into the Mediterranean Sea, this beach town is friendly and fun with a long and sandy bathing beach, seafront promenade lined with mansions, vibrant nightlife, and fashionable boutiques. Since the 1990’s, Sitges has been a favorite hangout of avant garde artists, as reflected in a wealth of Modernist structures throughout the city.
The old town center of Sitges sits on a gentle slope facing the interior of the country and is home to cobbled alleyways, palaces and ancient castles, and historic buildings from the Modernism and Noucentisme movements. The Cau Ferrat Museum was built in the 1990’s as the home and painting studio of Santiago Rusinol, a Catalan painter, playwright, and art collector and one of the prominent creators of the Catalan modernism style. The Maricel Museum is located in a house designed by the American architect Charles Deering at the beginning of the 20th century and contains art collections from the Middle Ages and the Baroque period.
The central bathing beach in Sitges is divided by two breakwaters, and a pedestrian promenade stretches along its entire length. The city has two nudist beaches and a gay beach.
Sitges is also a city of events and festivals. The Carnaval de Sitges is renowned as the best carnival of Catalonia and one of the best in Spain, attracting hundreds of thousands of people in February, with its colorful array of music, dance, parades, and extravagant shows. In June the International Theater Festival takes center stage, and the Fiesta Major which takes place at the end of August includes a spectacular display of fireworks. The celebrated International Fantasy Film Festival takes place annually in early October.
While Sitges is a small town, it is full of activity, culture, and fun. Shopaholics relish the many shops, and boating enthusiasts enjoy the city’s port. With its “micro-climate” of more than 300 days of sun a year, Sitges has, for good reason, become a popular tourist destination for adults and families.
