About Ripoll
Ripoll, known as the “cradle of Catalonia,” has authentic Catalan charm along with stunning landscapes and historic landmarks.
Ripoll, a small town in the Pyrenees, is located at the convergence of the Freser and Ter Rivers.
Ripoll was built around the 9th century Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, considered to be one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Spain. Its 12th century entrance is an outstanding illustration of Romanesque sculpture and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery has been through several changes over the centuries due to natural causes as well as war, and much of the current building was rebuilt in the late 19th century.
The 12th century Church of Sant Pere is another Ripoll landmark, and it is currently home to the Ethnographic Museum. The museum contains an impressive array of relics of the monastery, historical artifacts, ceramics, furniture, clothes, and weapons.
Ripoll blends the old and the new, history and adventure. You’ll find great cycling, hiking, and climbing, and in the winter you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Vallter 2000 ski resort. Ripoll is also a great base for touring neighboring areas.
