About Tarifa
Tarifa, the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula and continental Europe, is located in the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. This popular vacation destination is known for its consistent wind conditions and stunning beaches, making it the ideal setting for water sports including windsurfing and kite boarding, and for its mix of culture, fun, and relaxation.
Tarifa is in the Spanish province of Cadiz in the Andalucia region. It began as a Roman settlement in the late 2nd century BC and was invaded in the 8th century by the Muslims. The city is still named for the commander of the invasion, Tariq Ibn Malik. The Muslims understood Tarifa’s strategic importance and built a fortress known as the Castle of Tarifa which is a combination of a Muslim fort and a Christian castle.
In the 13th century, the Christians took control of the city, and, with the discovery of the Americas, many of the local residents moved to Peru.
Tarifa’s old city is a maze of charming alleys. In its central plaza, Santa Maria, you’ll find the city hall building and the municipal museum with remains from Roman times. There are two important churches in the town, as well - Iglesia Mayor de San Mateo, built in the 16th century, and Iglesia de San Francisco, which has a beautiful baroque façade.
Alongside this history, you’ll find bars and cafes, beautiful views of nearby Africa, and – at its core– outstanding beaches and water sports.
