About Jerez De La Frontera
Jerez de la Frontera is a southern Andalusian city which, in addition to its rich history, is famous for its sherry, horses, and Flamenco.
Jerez de la Frontera, commonly known by its shortened name, “Jerez,” situated midway between the sea and the mountains, Jerez is also home to historic landmarks and popular festivals.
“Jerez” comes from Arabic and has become synonymous with “Sherry.” In fact, Jerez is part of the Sherry Triangle where wineries dot the landscape, offering tours and tastings. Don’t miss out on the tabancos, the taverns where locals traditionally went to buy Sherry and share a drink with friends – and, in more recent times, to enjoy local dishes and informal Flamenco music and dance performances, as well!
This charming town dates back to the Moorish era. Its old town, casco antiguo, is home to the Alcazaba, the 11th century Moorish fortress which has been partially renovated and contains a mosque, the Villavicencio Palace which today is a museum, and beautiful gardens with geometric flower beds and elaborate fountains. The 17th century Cathedral de San Salvador, built on the ruins of the mosque and finished in the 18th century, has Baroque, Gothic, and neoclassical features.
Jerez is a refined city which radiates wealth with its luxury shops, wide streets, ancient mansions, beautiful churches, and outstanding restaurants and bars. Connoisseur Sherry wine is produced and distributed here by the over 20 local wineries who grow the grapes in the regional limestone soil. A visit to a Bodega wine cellar is definitely a recommended experience!
Horses are also an important part of life in Jerez. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, a renowned riding school, is based here. It is one of the most prestigious classical riding institutions in the world and is dedicated to preserving the Andalusian riding tradition. The school offers horse shows and a carriage museum.
Jerez is also the real home of Spanish Flamenco. It started in the Santiago neighborhood by its many gypsy residents who developed the Flamenco culture, and, today, Flamenco clubs are ubiquitous in the city. The famed Flamenco Festival of Jerez takes place here in late February – early March, and it is a two-week celebration of great music and dance.
The wonderful Fiestas, attended by the rich and famous, along with horse shows and Flamenco performances, make Jerez a popular tourist destination.
