About Slovenia
Learn what makes this country special as you explore some of the world's finest nature, churches, caves, and vineyards across Slovenia.
Slovenia, located in Central Europe, is a utopia of stunning beauty – snow-capped mountains, sparkling blue lakes and rivers, and a Venetian-style coast. Many of Slovenia’s natural treasures are characterized by karst - landscape that is formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks, including limestone and dolomite- resulting in subterranean caves of magical, unique beauty throughout the country.
Slovenia is known as a destination for active outdoor activities -skiing, hiking, walking, mountain climbing, cycling, rafting, and canyoning to name just a few! For those who prefer the less active outdoors or are looking to rest up between adventures, Slovenia also offers beautiful beaches along the Adriatic coast.
Slovenia’s natural allure, further enhanced by its charming architecture - baroque chapels, dramatic castles, and charming harbor towns- and rich and delightful culture has put it on the map as a popular tourist destination. And, its renowned cuisine, which synthesizes elements from each of its neighboring countries, and outstanding wine has foodies buzzing.
Ljubljana (pronounced lyoo-blyah-nuh), the capital and largest city, is the colorful home of a variety of cultural, natural, and historic attractions and the ideal location for a stroll. The ubiquitous dragon, the symbol of the city, decorates bridges, railings, and buildings.
The Ljubljianica River, which flows through the lively old town and divides it from the city’s commercial hub, is lined by shops and cafes, and there is easy passage from one side to the next via its many bridges. Preseren Square is the city’s central square and is dominated by the iconic, bright pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.
Ljubljana Castle is a castle complex on Castle Hill and one of Ljubljana’s key landmarks. Once a medieval fortress, the castle today is a center of history, culture, and entertainment –including the unique Escape Castle adventure. Tivoli Park, the capital’s largest green space, offers an escape from the city with its botanical gardens, lush walking paths, and a fish pond.
Ljubljana is also home to numerous art galleries and museums, including the National Museum of Slovenia, the National Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art, and lively festivals during the summer months.
Outside the city, the serene Lake Bled, located in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, is one of Slovenia’s most popular destinations. Bled Island, which can be accessed by pletna boat - or rowboat for the more adventurous! - is one of the area’s central attractions. The small island is known for its stunning views and 17th century church – and for the bells continuously being tolled by visitors who, based on tradition, want to have their wishes come true. Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia which dates back to 1011, offers spectacular views, a museum, and a wine cellar which offers tastings.
Postojna Cave, the most visited cave in Europe and a natural marvel, is a 13-mile system of subterranean caves with the most unique stalactite, stalagmite, and other types of rock formations. Visitors travel along its walls aboard an underground mini-train.
In close distance to the cave is the majestic Predjama Castle, an 800 year old baroque castle built within the mouth of a cave, and the largest cave castle in the world. The castle, clinging to limestone cliffs, has a network of secret tunnels.
Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s largest protected space and its only national park. There are glorious views from its high peaks, and the unspoiled natural beauty of its lush Alpine valleys, crystal brooks and lakes, and unusual, diverse faun and flora present rich opportunities for exploring and adventure.
Lake Bohinj, another one of Slovenia’s Alpine lakes, is also famous for its outstanding beauty – offering cycling, trails, kayaking, and horseback riding, Lake Bohinj has become another popular tourist destination especially during the summer months. Vintgar Gorge is known as one of Slovenia’s most enchanting attractions. Its waterfalls, pools, and other natural marvels are a photogenic, magical landscape that is easy to explore by foot.
