About Santarem
SantaremSantarem is the charming capital of the Province of Ribatejo, a vibrant city standing atop a plateau on the west bank of the Tagus River.
The Province of Ribatejo is the only one in Portugal that does not border Spain or the ocean, and Santarem’s strategic location was important throughout history. Santarem has served as an agricultural center for the surrounding fertile plains which are known for agriculture, cattle breeding, and bullfighting.
As the “Gothic capital of Portugal,” Santarem is home to a lovely historic old town with many quiet streets and beautiful Gothic buildings, serving as a reminder of Santarem’s past glory. There are quaint shops and artist workshops which create an atmosphere of old-fashioned sophistication. There are spectacular views from the walls of the old town, and it is easy to understand why the Roman, Visigoth, Moorish, and the Portuguese armies sought to gain a foothold in this strategic stronghold overlooking the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). From the "Gates of the Sun" garden, Portas do Sol, which stretches across the Moorish citadel complex, there are also wonderful views of the river and the great plains around it.
Don’t miss the wonderful museums in Santarem! The Casa Museu Passos Canavarro belongs to one of Portugal’s most influential families, the Canavarros. It was the 19th century home of the statesman Passos Manuel Canavarro, and, today, his octogenarian great-great-grandson lives there. The museum is like a journey through time, displaying treasure of art and historic personal items ranging from furniture to 16th century maps. The Archeology Museum is housed in the Church of San Joao De Alporao, a charming 12th century church built in Romanesque and Gothic style with intricate detail on its facade, Azulejos, changing exhibitions, and the impressive tomb of Don Duarte de Mange, who was killed in the 15th century in the battle against the Moors in North Africa.
The 15th century Santa Maria Iglesia is a church with a magnificent façade and a tiered arched gate, rich in exquisite carvings. Don Pedro de Mange, whose family founded the church, is buried there as is Pedro Alvarez Cabral, a Brazilian explorer born in the city.
Equestrian bullfighting has a long history in Santarem, and it is still part of its culture, though it has become increasingly more controversial with time. As an agricultural town, you’ll also see animal grazing in the surrounding fertile pastures.
If you’re looking for a vibrant nightlife, you’ll find it here, as well – the town is home to many restaurants and bars.
