About Vila Nova De Gaia
The city of Vila Nova de Gaia, well known for its port wine, is also home to breathtaking views, beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and amazing street art.
Vila Nova de Gaia is often associated with one thing – port wine. This region is where the world’s port wine has originated since the 17th century. Located south of Porto, on the other side of the Douro River, the city is in close proximity to the fertile, mountainous Douro Valley where the grapes are grown as well as to the Atlantic Ocean, turning it into a hub for wine export.
Vila Nova de Gaia was originally established by the Romans and called Cale. In the 8th century, when the Muslims invaded Portugal, it was abandoned by its inhabitants, who returned in the 11th century after the liberation of Portugal. It was then that the city received its current name.
Port is a sweet, strong dessert wine which is now considered to be one of Portugal’s most important exports. Due to the city’s pleasant climate, its conditions are ideal for aging the wine, and Gaia has become the city of wine cellars. It is said that Gaia is home to about 60 cellars, of which 20 are open to visitors for tours, providing information about the wine, its production process, aging, and, of course, tasting.
Gaia is also known for its breathtaking views. There is a cable car which provides spectacular views of the city. It starts near the upper level of the Dom Luis Bridge and ends at the bustling and spacious promenade with bars, restaurants, cafes, and a square for musical events. The 16th century monastery, Mosteiro da Serra Pilar, as well as, Jardin Do Morro, a garden located at the end of the upper level of the bridge also offer expansive views.
In addition, Gaia has beautiful beaches, outstanding restaurants, and interesting street art by the Portuguese artist, Artur Bordalo, who is famous for using street trash to create outstanding animal sculptures, sending a strong social message about pollution and endangered species.
