Guimaraes, the “Cradle of Portugal,” is a well-preserved, vibrant medieval town that has retained the charm and authenticity of Portugal’s glorious past.

Guimaraes, a charming town known as the “Cradle of Portugal,” is located in northern Portugal. It is the birthplace of the country’s first king, Alfonso Henriques, in the 12th century, and it is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval town which has retained much of the charm and authenticity of the country’s glorious past. It is located 40 miles from Porto and is among the “must- sees” of any trip to Portugal! 

The town’s historic center is linked with the development of the Portuguese national identity in the 12th century, and it is a maze of picturesque alleys and squares between 14th century buildings. The walk along the town’s medieval walls is an enjoyable activity for visitors, offering great views.

There are quite a few historic highlights in Guimaraes. The Castelo de Guimaraes, a Portuguese National Monument, is a 10th century medieval castle which was built as a military fortification to defend the village and its monastery from the Moors. From the top, there are spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area.

The glorious Ducal Palace, built in the 15th century for the Duke of Braganca, had been abandoned for several centuries and was restored to its glory in the 20th century. It serves as a museum today with collections of art, weapons, tapestries, and other artifacts, and includes a chapel with beautiful stained glass windows.

The Sao Gualter Church is one of the Guimaraes’ most impressive buildings. It is a combination of two church spires, tile (azulejos) work, and incredible gardens leading up to the entrance.

The Monte da Penha (Penha Mountain) has a high peak with a religious sanctuary, restaurants, and camping grounds. You can reach the top by cable car or by hiking, and the views are spectacular, especially at sunset!

In 2001, Guimaraes was officially recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and, in 2012, it was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture, which led to the establishment of cultural projects and gave a creative flair to the city.

Guimaraes is a student city, and there is a vibrant nightlife in the town with its cafes, restaurants, and bars.
