About Sintra
Sintra is a charming, picturesque town located in the wooded hills of Portugal’s Sintra Mountains, a day trip from Lisbon.
A historic royal resort, the town is dotted with colorful, pastel villas, castles and palaces, and centuries-old monasteries – many of which are concealed in its pine forests.
The National Palace of Pena, Palacio Nacional de Peña, situated at a height of 656 square feet above sea level, was the summer residence of the 19th century kings of Portugal. The German Prince Fernando II, who married Maria II of Portugal, was an art lover who fell in love with Sintra and turned its 16th century monastery into a palace. The fairytale-like palace is colorful, with domes, Moorish gates, and turrets, and it is set among a surrounding, idyllic park. From the rooftops, there are wonderful views of the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, all the way to Lisbon.
The Quinta Da Regaleira is another beautiful, romantic palace, and it is decorated in neo-Gothic style. Built at the beginning of the 20th century by the millionaire Carvalho Monteiro, a Brazilian coffee mogul, the spectacular gardens, with their fountains, statues, secret passages, and pools – all with mystical symbolism- are its main attraction.
The Palacio Nacional De Sintra is the original medieval palace of Sintra, and its pair of conical chimneys have become the town’s icon.
The Castelo dos Mouros is a well-preserved Moorish citadel. Perched 1352 feet above sea level, its 9th century walls and towers are visible from afar. The castle was expanded in the 13th and 15th centuries, and its interior is a mixture of Moorish and Manueline styles, including courtyards with decorative arabesques. Its azulejos (ceramic tiles) in geometric patterns date back to the 15th-16th centuries and are among the oldest in Portugal.
The Monserrate Palace is an outstanding masterpiece of Romanticism. It served as a retreat for writers, and, together with its magnificent gardens comprised of exotic species from around the globe, it is one of the Sintra’s highlights.
The city’s landmarks, along with its charming streets, winding alleys, and spectacular natural beauty have made Sintra a popular tourist destination. The English poet, Lord Byron, visited here, and recalled it in his famous poem, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage: “Sintra's glorious Eden intervenes in variegated maze of mount and glen.”
Sintra’s cultural landscape was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
