About Tavira
Tavira, a charming, romantic town located in Algarve region, extends along both sidesof the Gilao River and is the perfect destination for a blend of sea, surf, and culture.
It is home to historic sites, including ruins, an ancient fortress standing atop a hill, a Roman bridge, and several Gothic churches from the Renaissance period. On a stroll through the town’s maze of cobblestone streets you’ll discover ancient gardens, shady squares, an active fishing port, and a new market. Boats from the town go to the islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park which has some of the area’s best beaches.
Due to its proximity to the coast of Morocco, Tavira served as a base for Portuguese expeditions to North Africa during the Age of Discovery. It was a source of supplies for ships, especially wine, salt, and salted fish. It later expanded its maritime trade to the export of salted fish, almonds, figs, and wine.
In 1520, Tavira became the largest settlement in the Algarve and gained the status of a city. However, the city began to deteriorate after its riverbed was blocked in the 17th century, and earthquakes and plagues later destroyed the city. It returned to being a quiet fishing village until tourism took off there in the 20th century.
One of Tavira’s main attractions is the Tavira Castle. Originally built by the Phoenicians as a fortification, most of the structure was attributed to the 10th century Moors who expanded it further in the 12th century. Destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, all that remains are the walls and towers, but there is beautiful landscaping on the site and a spectacular view of the city.
The Ponte Romans Bridge is another attraction. Though said to date back to Roman times, this seven-arched bridge was reconstructed throughout the centuries, most recently in 1989 following major flood damage. It is a pedestrian bridge which offers panoramic views of the city.
Tavira also is home to several historic churches, with the Igreja da Misericordia the most famous. Built in the 16th century, it is considered to be the finest Renaissance monument in Algarve. From its bell tower you will also enjoy amazing views over the city.
Tavira’s city square, Praca da Republica, is located on the bank of the river, and the promenade the market square are the center of life in the city. Tavira’s white sand islands are renowned, with Ilya de Tavira one of its most outstanding, featuring both bathing and water sports.
