About Estremoz
Estremoz is a beautiful, historic town with an authentic atmosphere and one of the region’s famous “white cities,” built largely from the local white marble.
Estremoz, a beautiful town in the Alentejo region, is one of the regions famous “white cities,” also known as “marble cities” – called in Portuguese “Cidade Branca.” The excellent quality white marble is quarried in and around Estremoz, and it has been used not only for the construction of buildings and monuments, but also for cobblestones! There are tours of the quarries available.
Perched at a height of about 1312 feet above sea level, this ancient fortified city has retained its authentic atmosphere. It is surrounded by a 13th century wall, and it is home to an imposing 13th century castle, the Estremoz Castle, which is the town’s top attraction. The "Tower of the Three Crowns" rises above the castle. Made of white marble, it is named after the 3 kings who participated in its construction, Sancho II, Alfonso III, and Dinis. The Capela da Rainha Santa, a chapel located within the castle, honors Elizabeth of Aragon who lived there in the 14th century and features beautiful azulejos depicting her life.
Outside of Estremoz is the regal-looking Evora Monte castle, which had been used as a fortress starting from the 14th century. The castle itself is beautiful, and the views are spectacular.
The town’s charming main square is Rossio Marques de Pombal, and, along its cobblestone streets there are colorful ceramic tiles and rows of orange trees.
Estremoz is also known as a busy commercial center with shops selling agricultural tools, pottery, and a popular weekly farmer’s market in the town square.
