About Ischia
If you’re looking for a chilled, relaxing vacation, Ischia is the place for you.
Ischia, the largest of the islands in the Gulf of Naples, was formed by volcanic activity. The spa and wellness resorts in Ischia are renowned and, in addition to the locals, vacationers come from all over Europe to dip in the dozens of thermal springs that emanate from the depths of the earth.
Global tourism on the island was boosted significantly following the books by Italian novelist Elena Ferrante – and it even got to star in the television series based on the books.
Mount Epomeo, in the center of the island, rises to a height of 788 meters (2585 feet) above sea level, and there are several towns on the island. The capital of the island of Porto, though it is known by the locals as “Ischia,” and the most visited town is Forio. The most remarkable attraction on the island is Aragon Castle which is situated on a small rocky island near the big island. The castle with its 2 towers was built in 474 BC by the King of Syracuse. Over the centuries, it was used by several rulers, including the Spanish Alfonso of Aragon. There are also a number of churches on the island as well as a monastery, part of which was used as residences. In the 20th century, the monastery was transferred to private ownership, and today it is open to tourists. It is accessible via a bridge that connects it to the big island.
Stay in one of the luxurious resort hotels on the island and enjoy the abundance of health and spa treatments that are available. Sample the rich Mediterranean cuisine in the island’s many outstanding restaurants, and don’t miss the wonderful Il Dolce Monte Epomeo cake named after the mountain and symbolizing the island.
With a Mediterranean climate, Ischia has hot dry summers and mild winters. If you’re looking for sun, June to September are ideal months for enjoying the beach.
Ahh, the sweetness of doing nothing - or, as they say in Italian, Il Dolce Far Niente!
