About Sligo
The County Sligo, on the northwest coast of Ireland, is located along the Atlantic coast and has a rugged landscape with many interesting rock formations.
The most popular activity in this county is hiking and there are some marked trails that will take you through forests and mountains like the Benbulben Forest Walk aka the Gortarowey Walk, which is 10 minutes from Sligo Town. The most famous peak in County Sligo is that of the Benbulbin, a large flat-top rock formation nicknamed Irelands own Table.
In the capital city of Sligo there is the Yeats Memorial Building with a permanent exhibition honoring William Butler Yeats, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. He was laid to rest in 1948 in the St. Columba's Church aka Drumcliffe Church, not far from the Benbulben Rock.
Sligo, the capital city and the largest city in the county, is situated on the banks of the Garavogue River, which flows from Lough Gill into Sligo Bay. In the center of the town are the ruins of the Dominican Monastery (priory) which is referred to as the "Sligo Abbey".
The megalithic cemetery in Sligo, called Carrowmore, has the largest number of prehistoric monuments in all of Ireland and is one of the oldest in all of Europe, dating back to about 5000 BC
