About Laois
Nestled in the Irish Midlands, County Laois played a major part in Irish history.
The county was also known as the Queen's County(In the mid 1500’s Queen Mary Tudor of England gave it its name).
The county has some preserved monuments that are listed on the National Monument (Ireland), for example Dunamase Castle is situated between Stradbally and Portlaoise.
The biggest town is Portlaoise and it was built by the English around a local fort. Today the town offers a variety of options for lodging, shopping and entertainment.
The Slieve Bloom Mountains are one of the oldest mountains in Europe; between the counties of Laois and Offaly. You can walk, bike, hike and enjoy the incredible views and unusual sites. Outdoor activities throughout the county include self-driving canal cruising, biking and hiking. Golf is popular and you will find some excellent golf courses in the region, such as the Portlaoise Golf Club
Make sure to tour the many small, quaint villages and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Irish.
