Surabaya is the capital of Jawa Timur (East Java), located on northeastern Java island and along the edge of the Madura Strait and the second-largest-city in Indonesia.
Kebun Binatang Surabaya (Surabaya Zoo) or KBS, opened in 1916, was the first in the world to have successfully bred orangutans in captivity. Other interesting destinations include: Masjid Cheng Ho (Zheng He Mosque), a recently built mosque, the first in Indonesia with Chinese-style architecture; Tugu Pahlawan (Hero monument), a 41 meter high monument, is the main symbol of Surabaya and commemorates the heroes of the revolutionary struggle; and Pantai Kenjeran (Kenjeran Beach), located in the eastern of Surabaya.
