About Chios
The capital of its namesake island, Chios is built on an ancient city and boasts a number of preserved historic sites.
The town of Chios is the main town on the island of Chios, North Aegean, Greece, located on the eastern coast of the island facing the Turkish coastal town of Çeşme. Although the town continues to expand, the centre of the town is still concentrated between the old port and castle where the administration, several museums, the main shopping street "Aplotaria", and the municipal gardens lie.
Directly in the centre of the island, between the villages of Avgonyma to the west and Karyes to the east, is the 11th century monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
