Vassa grew around a 14C castle, built by Swedish sailors. Today it is a vibrant university city, with a wealth of 19C landmarks.
Vaasa is a city on the west coast of Finland, and is the regional capital of Ostrobothnia.
Because of its role in the civil war, Vaasa became known as "The White City and a Statue of Freedom, depicting a victorious White soldier, was erected in the town square.
The town's coastal location offered good conditions for seafaring.
