About South Zealand Island
Close your eyes and picture quaint fishing towns, sandy beaches and harmonious nature at its best. This is the island of South Zealand (Syd Sjaelland).
In the southern part of the island of Zealand, spread along the Lowlands, are lush verdant fields and placid lakes, whilst charming fishing villages are dotted along the shores of the Baltic Sea. This area also includes dozens of small islands including the three main ones: Lolland, Falster and Møn.
Southeast of Store Heddinge are the white chalk Cliffs of Stevns, which stretch for approximately 16 km on the east coast. In 2014 they were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Without getting too technical, the jagged cliffs were created by the frequent erosion from the crashing Baltic Sea waves and are of geological importance especially because there is fossil evidence in the limestone cliffs that tell a geological history of millions of years. This spectacular phenomenon also exists in Mon Island, where the white cliffs soar up to a height of 120 meters above seawater.
The largest city in South Zealand Island is Næstved which offers many restaurants, entertainment venues, three large shopping centers (often called the shopping center of Southern Zealand) , the Bon-Bon Land amusement park open in the spring and summer months, fun for the whole family. Just outside of Naestved is Gavno Island with the Gavno Castle which hosts many fairs and events. Don’t miss a visit to the Holmegaard Glass Factory renown around the world for its famous glassworks.
On the north western side of South Zealand lies a stretch scenic beaches. The most beautiful of them is the Bildsø Strand Beach, a sandy and picturesque beach where the Bildsø pine forest stretches along and next to it are camping sites.
On the southern island of Falster lies Marielyst, one of the most popular towns in Denmark with its golden beach that stretches for about 20 km with its sand dunes, campsites, guesthouses and surfing centers.
