Corinth is a city and former municipality in Corinthia, Peloponnese, Greece, and is the capital of Corinthia. Corinth derives its name from Ancient Corinth, a city-state of antiquity. In 1858, the old city, now known as Archaia Korinthos was totally destroyed by an earthquake. New Corinth was then built on the coast of the Gulf of Corinth. The Corinth Canal, carrying ship traffic between the western Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea, is about 4 kilometres east of the city. Natural features around the city include the narrow coastal plain of Vocha, the Corinthian Gulf, the Saronic Gulf, the Oneia Mountains, and the monolithic rock of Acrocorinth, where the medieval acropolis was built.

Rethymno is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece. This region as a whole is rich with ancient history and the town itself still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. A Wine Festival is held there annually at the beginning of July. Another festival, in memory of the destruction of the Arkadi Monastery, is held on 7–8 November. The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza, is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete. Other monuments include the Neratze mosque, the Great Gate, the Piazza Rimondi and the Venetian Loggia.
