About Marvao
Marvao, a uniquely beautiful medieval town set on a high cliff, has great views of the Alentejo region and is surrounded by well-preserved 13th century walls.
Marvao is one of Portugal’s most beautiful medieval towns. It is perched on a huge granite cliff, about 2800 feet high, near the border with Spain, offering spectacular views over the vast plains of the Alentejo region. Marvao is often described as an “eagle's nest" as it is hidden in the hills in a fairytale-like setting. Marvao even made it to the New York Times bestselling book, 1000 Places to See before You Die!
The charming town is surrounded by impressively well-preserved 13th century walls and is home to a maze of cobblestone streets and whitewashed stone cottages with Gothic arches, Manueline windows, and wrought iron balconies adorned with flowers.
The 13th century Marvao Castle, built by Dom Dinis, is the town’s most popular site. The well-preserved structure, which seems to emerge from the rock on which it is built, still has its enormous cistern and cannons pointing towards Spain. The views from the castle are spectacular. The author, Jose Saramago, wrote, ``From Marvao one can see the entire land... It is understandable that from this place, high up in the keep at Marvao Castle, visitors may respectfully murmur, 'How great is the world.’''
The municipal museum, with its interesting exhibits of religious paintings and artifacts, is located in the former Santa Maria Church.
Marvao hosts several cultural festivals annually, including the renowned Marvao International Music Festival.
A visit to Marvao is truly unforgettable. It is an enchanted town with unique beauty and an authentic feel that has inspired poets and artists such as Jose Amaro who wrote, “Portugal at your feet and Spain in your outstretched arms."
