About Diksmuide
Get to know Belgium's past in this historic town which dates as far back as the 9C and is home to several important WWI sites.
The belfry contains a 30-bell carillon which is recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
The City Hall and neighboring Saint Nicolas Church were completely rebuilt after World War I in the Gothic style of the 14C-15C. The "Trench of Death" preserves the trench setting where Belgian soldiers fought under the most perilous conditions. A peace monument, the IJzertoren, was built after WWI, but was demolished in 1946 because during the WWII it had been the scene of Nazi ceremonies. A new tower was built in the 1950s, which houses a WWI museum. The tower is also the scene of the yearly celebration of peace and of Flemish autonomy. Several military cemeteries are located around Diksmuide.
